• I volunteer for a citizenship class aimed at getting immigrants with very little literacy to past the citizenship text. This is their course material and its excellent for a low literacy level student. The approach to take with this text is really rote memorization (reading the passages and getting the students to repeat after you out loud), and lots of repetition. It helps understanding of some higher level terms by defining the words in the simplest way (some overly-simplified, but that is what is needed at this level, development of the ideas can come later as the student advances in their overall understanding). This book is simple enough for students to read at home and covers all 100 civics questions on the actual test. Recommended.
• This book is a must read and practice for the Citizenship test. Very easy to read, understand and test oneself. My students LOVE it and so do I. Then use the info from the Citizenship website afterwards which is more difficult. I love the Flash cards too.
• I use this in one on one tutoring with students who have limited vocabulary or learning difficulties. It explains material in simple terms, including defining words like "participate" or "democracy.". It covers the basics of the citizenship test but is much easier to understand than the standard book.
• This book has been extremely helpful for my ESL student. It breaks the subject matter down and explains what a lot of words mean which are really difficult for someone with limited English, simple, good repetition, useful illustrations.
• I volunteer to help teach a Citizenship class. This is the book we use. It is very good for our ESL learners as it is written in language they can understand. If you are looking for a basic book that will help prepare for taking the test, this is a great fit.
